DR. PHIL'S

Many of you who are familiar with Dr. Phil probably didn’t even know he had a last name! He puts his full moniker on his new diet- Dr. Phil McGraw's Ultimate Weight Solution: The 7 Keys to Weight Loss Freedom. Dr. Phil, as he is widely known, is a talk show host and psychologist. Now he is using behavior management as a guide to a weight-loss plan that follows seven steps to successful dieting. He is another believer that emotional eating leads to unhealthy habits and weight gain.

Foods Emphasized: High fiber foods such as complex carbohydrates, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats

Foods Discouraged: Foods eaten because of emotional motivation

Premise and guidelines: Dr. Phil’s diet claims to be personalized and based on scientific evidence. Dr. Phil’s popular television show has put his relationship theories into the spotlight. Now is using those theories to address his own method for weight loss. Dr. Phil's diet puts much emphasis on lifestyle changes, attempting to create a healthy relationship with food, as opposed to providing a quick fix. he takes the same approach that one would when losing a toxic boyfriend or girlfriend, and follows a step-by-step approach to success. This plan doesn't require calorie counting or food restriction, but instead urges dieters to recognize why they are experiencing food cravings, and to identify the cause of these specific cravings. Dr. Phil calls this effect High-Response Cost/High-Yield eating. Moderation is emphasized, especially as a way to gain control over out-of-control emotional responses to food. Items like whole grains, lean proteins, low-fat dairy, lots of fruits and veggies, and a small amount of healthful unsaturated fats -- in moderate amounts, are all encouraged on this diet.

Critics of the diet point out that Dr. Phil immediately assumes that everyone who has weight issues is an emotional eater and addressing their emotions is the key to weight loss. This may not always be the case, and so approaching weight loss this way might not lead to success. While there is nothing extraordinary about the diet guidelines, they are basic, which is good for someone who needs to spend the energy being mindful about ‘why’ they are eating anything. There is also benefit to be had by focusing on self-affirmation and deep examination, although it may not shed any pounds for you.Plus, there is a line of weight loss shakes and energy bars to supplement the plan. A diet pill called "Shape Up" was introduced recently to accompany the diet, and Dr. Phil is already being taken to court by unhappy dieters who claim that the pills were expensive and did absolutely nothing to help lose weight. They also insinuate that the advertisements caused them to believe that they could lose weight without any additional measures being taken, and they were disappointed with the results.
